Hemp oil: production, effects & application

The production of hemp oil:

A closer look reveals some differences between the oils. Hemp oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). The seeds are gently cold-pressed. Since the seeds do not contain THC, this psychoactive substance is also not found in hemp oil.

The effect of organic hemp oil:

The special properties of the cooking oil are mainly due to the high content and the correct ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids.

These essential amino acids, often found in animal products, are especially beneficial when taken in the right ratio. The ideal ratio is 1:1 or 5:1. Source

This ratio is so important because the body processes these fatty acids using the same enzyme. However, omega-3 fatty acids are less readily utilized by the body if the necessary enzymes are already blocked by omega-6 fatty acids. Source

Sunflower oil, which is often used in cooking, has a rather unbalanced ratio of 120:1. Source

Therefore, hemp seed oil is very suitable as a cooking oil and is considered the healthiest oil alongside linseed oil.

Other benefits of hemp oil:

  • Contains valuable vitamins (B1, B2, E)
  • Provides essential minerals (potassium, zinc, phosphorus, sodium, copper)
  • Supports cell growth and protects against oxidative stress
  • Promotes nervous system and muscle health

These vitamins and minerals work wonders! They support our cells' growth and protect them from damage with antioxidants. Additionally, elements like potassium and sodium support our muscles and nervous system. Source

The multitude of beneficial nutrients contained in hemp oil have a positive effect on our bodies. Our immune system benefits from the mineral richness of hemp oil, including the elements copper and zinc. It's no wonder, then, that hemp oil is experiencing a revival in the kitchen today and is increasingly being used as part of the "superfood" trend.

CBD oil: production, ingredients and application

Production of full-spectrum CBD oil:

Unlike hemp oil, CBD oil is extracted not from the seeds, but from the leaves and flowers of the female hemp plant. Only female plants produce the sought-after inflorescences, which contain high concentrations of the active ingredient cannabidiol (CBD).

The Swiss Organic Regulation ensures excellent organic quality. It is particularly important that the products are tested by independent laboratories to ensure quality. It is also essential that no artificial products such as herbicides and pesticides are used. Learn more about SwissExtract's 100% transparent manufacturing process here: Cultivation & Production

Ingredients of CBD oil

In contrast to hemp oil, CBD oil primarily focuses on cannabidiol (CBD). Named after its active ingredient, the oil is used in various products or on its own. Unlike the well-known cannabinoid THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), it is non-psychoactive.

A brief digression into science: Our bodies also produce cannabinoids. These stimulate a part of our nervous system, the so-called endocannabinoid system (ECS). Source

This part of the nervous system is a fundamental component of our internal balance and regulates processes such as digestion and metabolism, our pain perception, the immune system and inflammatory processes, our mood, emotions, sleep, and stress. Source

Back to the ingredients: CBD oil contains a variety of ingredients, which can vary depending on the manufacturing process and the carrier oil used. The main components are:

Ingredients of CBD oil:

  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • Carrier oils (e.g. hemp seed oil, MCT oil)
  • Terpenes (provide fragrance and aromas)
  • Other cannabinoids (in legal, non-psychoactive amounts)
  • Antioxidants
  • Trace elements & vitamins

Applications CBD oil

CBD oil has a wide range of uses, particularly in cosmetics. As a natural additive in creams, ointments, and lotions, it has offered increasing benefits, especially in recent years. Skincare products containing CBD are becoming increasingly popular worldwide. More on the boom in skincare products containing CBD

No wonder, since more and more users report a subjective feeling of relaxation. The oil also makes the skin supple, and antioxidants protect against free radicals. Source

Due to its positive properties, CBD oil is also often used for joint and muscle care. Joint oil is particularly beneficial for painful muscle tension. It supports regeneration, relaxes tired joints, and activates tense muscles. People with frequently tense muscles, such as athletes, particularly appreciate the properties of CBD oil.

CBD cosmetics

Cosmetics such as soothing CBD face creams or body lotions with CBD are moisturizing and also promote cell vitality. CBD cosmetics can help moisturize the skin barrier and thus keep the skin supple.

A strong and well-maintained skin barrier plays a key role in the skin's aging process. Therefore, effective ingredients that nourish and hydrate the skin are so important in skincare products. Plant-based ingredients such as CBD or tea tree extract are particularly well-suited for sensitive skin.

When applying pure CBD oil to the skin, users apply the oil to affected areas to reap the benefits it offers. Our CBD oil from Switzerland is applied to the skin twice daily.

CBD & hemp oil: What is allowed?

The information so far has covered the differences between hemp oil and CBD oil in terms of origin, ingredients, and intended uses. However, one aspect that has received less attention is the legal status of these oils.

With hemp oil, this is relatively simple. Because the edible oil is extracted from the seeds of the cannabis plant, it contains no psychoactive substances. Hemp oil is therefore legal and an absolute miracle cure in the kitchen.

With CBD products like CBD oil, things are a bit more complicated. CBD oil has been legally available in Switzerland since 2018. However, there are certain conditions that must be met before CBD products can be sold and advertised.

Legal conditions for CBD oil in Switzerland:

  • THC content must be below 1%
  • No psychotropic effect allowed
  • No medical claims in cosmetic products

If these conditions are met, CBD products such as CBD oil or CBD cannabis may be sold. Source

Conclusion:

Hemp oil and CBD oil are often confused, but they differ significantly in their production, ingredients, and application. Hemp oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of the hemp plant and is packed with valuable omega fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals—perfect for a healthy diet. CBD oil, on the other hand, comes from the flowers and leaves of the plant, contains cannabidiol (CBD), and is primarily used in cosmetics. While hemp oil is completely freely available for sale, there are strict legal regulations for CBD oil in Switzerland, particularly regarding THC content and advertising. Both oils have their own benefits, but they should not be confused with one another!
